In Cambodia

Hey guys. This place is a real eye opener. The people are so happy and friendly but the place is so dirty and run down. The palace and temples are very rich looking though. It is such a contrast.

I have a question for you to ponder and I would like your thoughts.

Is the money that tourists like me spend in this country (which helps keep poorer people in work) out weighed by exposing people to things, and a way of life, that is out of their reach right now? And if and when that way of life is possible will it ruin what is good about a country like this?

You might want to do some Googling to see if you can get some images and facts about what it is like here in Phonm Phehn (check my spelling... I've gone blank while typing this!) Cambodia. We are only spending one more day here then we are going to go and look at some more remote places.

I hope you are having a good break :)

  2. Hey Benjamin I'm not sure but I think there is only one language but there are a lot of people living here from Thailand, Vietnam as well as English speaking countries. The French lived here for a long time as well so there are some people who speak French too. You should Google it and let us know what you find out.

  8. The pictures you showed us today were amazing and shocking at the same time!!!I can't believe the things that happened to all those people. But the thing I really can't believe is the road rules and how the people there don't use them!!!!I mean I never thought I would see a whole entire family on one motorbike its amazing!

  9. I agree with you Eilish. There were many things that shocked me that the people of Cambodia just accept and deal with. We are very lucky with the way we live and the things we have that make our lives easier. I have to say though that the people there seem to be so much happier than people here in general.

  12. Ihope you had a lovely time, sure looked like you did. The thing I liked the most of what you showed us are the road rules :) It's pretty cool to get away with things like that!

From seeing all the other people who are less fortunate than us it makes me really sad. But seeing how they cope with it is truly amazing, such happy people (:

  13. Seems like you had a great time in Cambodia. It was horrible when you showed us pictures of where they were tortured and buried. Also just looking at what some people live in and how they are treated, I really am glad for what I have. What was your favourite part of your holiday?

  15. The Killing Fields and S21 was a very sad place and it is hard to comprehend that people live in conditions so different to ours.

There were four real highlights for me:
    1. Praying with the monks at 4am in a pagoda with incense and candles
    2. Sitting up the top of a mountain in a pagoda while the monsoon rains poured down with some elders that live there looking at their photos and communicating when we couldn't speak the same language
    3. Planting rice in a rice paddy with mud to my ankles and water to my knees with some local ladies
    4. Lying on the beach with local children lying and sitting with me talking away, helping them make friendship bracelets and sharing stories about our lives.

  17. I liked all the photos that you showed us from Cambodia, it really suprised me that some people can be so greedy with their money when there are people that can hardly get by only a couple of meters away ! I was also shocked about how all of the people were tortured and killed for pretty much no reason. ):
